Before you trust a Gold bot backtest
A rising equity curve is only the start. Use these seven checks to make your next test easier to understand and repeat.

Your seven-point backtesting checklist
- Identify the exact build and settings. Save the bot version, preset, test dates, timeframe and starting balance. Change one input at a time when comparing runs.
- Check your broker’s Gold symbol. XAUUSD names and contract specifications vary. Confirm tick size, lot step and trading sessions.
- Inspect the data and execution assumptions. Record the tester model, available tick history, spread, commission, swap and execution assumptions.
- Read losses alongside returns. Examine equity drawdown, losing streaks, trade count and the periods when the strategy struggles. Balance drawdown alone can hide floating losses.
- Test a separate period. Keep some dates out of your tuning process and evaluate the same settings there. Repeat across different market conditions.
- Try less favourable costs. Check whether the result survives higher costs and different execution assumptions instead of depending on one ideal test.
- Forward-test on demo. Compare actual execution and logs with expectations before considering live use. Demo results are also not a promise of live performance.
Follow the Redline walkthrough
Our short tutorial shows how to download ECFX XAU Redline and run an MT5 backtest. Use it alongside this checklist and the product documentation.

Keep the result in context
Automated trading involves substantial risk. Historical simulations and demo results do not guarantee future returns. Testing does not establish that a bot will meet a particular prop firm’s rules.
